Understanding the Hydration Process
Hydration begins as soon as cement comes into contact with water. The initial reactions create compounds that help form the early structure of the paste. Fresh crystals continue forming as long as moisture remains available. Concrete typically reaches full strength after about a month, unless additives or curing compounds are used to accelerate the process.
Compounds Formed During Hydration
Different cement types produce different compounds. With general purpose or Portland cement, four primary minerals contribute to strength development:
Tricalcium silicate
Dicalcium silicate
Tricalcium aluminate
Tetracalcium aluminoferrite
Early reactions form aluminate rich gels that stiffen the cement paste. After this dormant phase, further reactions take place and new crystals form, continuing the hydration process and strengthening the concrete.
Maximising Hydration with Curing Agents
Curing compounds help retain moisture in fresh concrete, protecting it from evaporation, temperature changes and weather exposure. Insufficient moisture leads to cracking, dusting and reduced strength.
Applying a curing agent improves hydration by maintaining the moisture required for chemical reactions. This results in stronger, more durable concrete. Curing should begin before all surface water evaporates, although timing depends on local weather conditions.
Types of Curing Agents
-
Water based curing agents: Ideal for projects that require fast turnaround times. They typically work over seven days, are non flammable and present minimal health or environmental risks.
-
Solvent based curing agents: Provide longer curing periods of up to 28 days. These compounds are flammable and require proper protective equipment including gloves and face masks.
