Hydrophilic Waterstops for Cast In-Situ Concrete

Updated: 8 December 2025

Construction joints are some of the most vulnerable points in a concrete structure. These areas are prone to water infiltration, which can cause deterioration of the concrete and corrosion of surrounding reinforcement. Ensuring a reliable seal at these joints is essential for maintaining long term structural performance.

Hydrophilic waterstops are designed specifically to seal cast in-situ concrete joints by expanding in the presence of moisture and forming a durable, watertight compression seal.

How Hydrophilic Waterstops Work

Hydrophilic waterstops are an effective and economical waterproofing solution for cast in-situ concrete joints. They are commonly used in zero to low movement joints, such as cold joints between footings and foundations. They may also be applied around formwork spacers, tie rods and pipe penetrations.

The name hydrophilic refers to their ability to absorb water. Once exposed to moisture, the material expands significantly, creating a protective and long lasting compression seal that prevents water from entering the joint.

Advantages of Hydrophilic Waterstops

Hydrophilic waterstops are made from durable materials that offer strong and lasting waterproofing performance. When correctly installed, they can seal water pressures of up to 50 metres, making them suitable for both vertical and horizontal joints in new and existing concrete.

  • Suitable for tunnels, reservoirs, subway stations and non moving joints.

  • Self adhesive options reduce the need for additional adhesives and labour.

  • Reduced risk of spalling due to controlled expansion formulas.

  • Cost effective alternative to traditional PVC or mechanical barriers.

High Quality Waterstops from Form Direct

Form Direct supplies premium grade hydrophilic waterstops for concrete joints that expand reliably without damaging surrounding concrete. Our products are engineered for consistency, durability and ease of installation.

A standout option in our range is Hydrotite. Hydrotite combines swelling hydrophilic materials with non expanding chloroprene rubber. When exposed to moisture, the hydrophilic section turns blue and the non swelling section turns black. This colour change allows contractors to confirm that no premature expansion has taken place before installation.
