How to Calculate Formwork Area

The Golden Rule: Contract Surface Area (CSA)

The core principle of formwork calculation is simple: identify the surface area of concrete that requires retention. This is your Contact Surface Area. The general rule is to calculate the surface area of concrete that requires retention.

Contact Surface Area (m2) = Contact Perimeter (m) x Height (m)

Different structural elements require different approaches:

A. Concrete Slabs (Edge Formwork)

For a slab-on-ground, you are only forming the edges. Calculate the perimeter length multiplied by the slab thickness. This determines your lineal metres of Formwork timber or steel edge boards.

  • Formula: Perimeter Length x Slab Thickness
  • Example: A 10m x 10m slab that is 0.1m (100mm) thick.
    • Perimeter: 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40m
    • Area: 40m x 0.1m = 4m2

B. Walls

You must account for both vertical faces plus the ends (bulkheads). Multiply the length by height for both sides, then add the thickness by height for the ends.

  • Formula: (Length x Height x 2) + (Thickness x Height x 2)
  • Example: A wall 5m long, 2m high, and 0.2m thick.
    • Faces: 5 x 2 x 2 = 20m2
    • Ends: 0.2 x 2 x 2 = 0.8m2
    • Total: 20.8m2
  • Product Solution: For large surface areas, modular systems like Steel-Ply are efficient. Ensure you account for Reinforcing & Accessories such as Z-bars and waterstops in your takeoff.

C. Columns

Calculate the full perimeter of the column and multiply by the height.

  • Formula: (Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3 + Side 4) x Height
  • Example: A 0.4m x 0.4m column that is 3m high.
    • Perimeter: 0.4 x 4 = 1.6m
    • Area: 1.6m x 3m = 4.8m2

Beyond the Board

Your CSA tells you how much ply or timber you need, but a secure site requires more.

  1. Waste: Add approximately 5% to 10% to your timber order to account for cutting and trimming.
  2. Bracing: Your CSA will dictate the spacing and quantity of walers, strongbacks, and props required to hold the formwork rigid against concrete pressure.
  3. Consumables: Don't forget Construction Consumables like release agents. These are calculated based on coverage rates per litre over your total CSA.
