How does Erosion Control Blankets Work?

Updated: 8 December 2025

Erosion control blankets are designed to stabilise soil, reduce runoff and support vegetation growth—especially on slopes, disturbed soils and drainage channels. Made from biodegradable or synthetic fibres, these blankets act as a protective layer that holds soil in place while still allowing air, water and sunlight to reach the seeds below.

As vegetation becomes established, biodegradable blankets slowly break down, leaving behind a strong root system that reinforces the soil. Used widely across agriculture, land rehabilitation and civil construction, erosion control blankets offer an efficient and environmentally responsible solution for managing erosion and improving germination.

Erosion Control Blankets Prevent Soil Loss & Assist Seed Establishment

Erosion control blankets provide temporary surface cover that protects soil particles from being shifted by wind or water. This shielding effect prevents young seedlings from being washed away during early growth stages.

By stabilising the soil surface, blankets reduce sediment displacement and create a favourable microenvironment where seeds can germinate and establish more quickly.

Materials Used in Erosion Control Blankets

Erosion control blankets vary in composition depending on project requirements. They typically include a top layer of netting, a bottom layer of netting and a filler layer made from synthetic or organic fibres arranged to form a three-dimensional matrix for full soil coverage.

Organic Materials

Organic fibres include coconut coir, jute, straw, wool, recycled paper, palm fibres, bamboo, maize, rice and blends of multiple materials. Each biodegradable component breaks down at a different rate—coir lasting the longest, followed by jute, then straw.

Material selection often depends on slope steepness, flow velocity, required lifespan and environmental conditions.

Synthetic Materials

Synthetic options may contain PET, polymer blends, PVC or polypropylene. Many blankets combine organic and synthetic materials for improved performance and longevity.

Form Direct’s erosion control blankets use composite coconut fibre infill encased within plastic grid layers and woven binding. Available in multiple grades, the range includes standard, reinforced and anti-scour variants.

Why You Need an Erosion Control Blanket

Protecting vegetation during early growth is essential for long-term soil stability. Erosion control blankets offer complete surface coverage, blending naturally into the environment while shielding seedlings from rainfall impact, runoff and harsh winds.

Lightweight construction allows grasses and plants to grow through the blanket, encouraging rapid root establishment. The blankets also help retain soil moisture, improving germination rates and early strike.

With high resistance to water flow and UV exposure, these blankets remain effective during critical vegetation establishment periods. Their uniform fibre distribution provides a nutrient source—including phosphorus and nitrogen—supporting successful revegetation.

By working with natural processes rather than against them, erosion control blankets offer a sustainable, low-impact method for stabilising challenging landscapes and protecting vulnerable soils.
